For Immediate Release [first published on December 23, 2008] The United Nations has designated the twenty-seventh day of each January, the anniversary of the liberation of the death camp at Auschwitz, as International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust. According to United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon:
The International Day in memory of the victims of the Holocaust is thus a day on which we must reassert our commitment to human rights....
We must also go beyond remembrance, and make sure that new generations know this history. We must apply the lessons of the Holocaust to today’s world. And we must do our utmost so that all peoples must enjoy the protections and rights for which the United Nations stands. In consideration of the fact that some individuals and organizations have determined to find a cure for autism, threatening to perpetrate a kind of medical genocide on the autistic community, this anniversary may be especially meaningful to many of us. Therefore, The League to Fight Neurelitism enthusiastically joins with the United Nations in proclaiming each twenty-seventh of January as International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust.
